Surfing Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach is well known as one of the classic surfing beaches in the area. Winter waves can be big. On good days in the summer when the swell and tides are right, surfers have some great sessions. Waves break right and left over a sandy bottom. Crowds are often heavy on weekends, however.

El Porto, at the north end of Manhattan Beach, is a popular surfing spot, partly because of the convenient parking and the snack shack right on the beach. El Porto is often a good place for beginners, but it can get big in the winter. Another place that draws attention is 26th-27th Street. Again, there are parking lots nearby. Expect to find some top surfers out on the waves at 27th Street.

Surfers are aware that after a heavy rain the storm drain that empties into the ocean near 28th Street can carry pollutants that should be avoided.

Manhattan Beach Pier

The current Manhattan Beach Pier was built in the 1990s, replacing an earlier pier from the 1920s. The newer version holds up to Pacific storms, but retains the feel of an old-time wharf. At the end of the 928-foot pier is the octagonal building that houses the Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium (see below). Tons of rock were dumped near the end of the pier, creating an artificial reef that protects the pier and supports marine life.

Anglers do well fishing from the pier, landing mackerel, croaker, surfperch, herring, rays, guitarfish, and now and then a halibut. Bass are most often caught off the end of the pier. Among the most popular baits are sandcrabs, shrimp, mussels, and cut anchovy. The pier has a few lights for night fishing, a restroom, snack bar, and benches and fish-cleaning stations.

Ocean Safety

California State Parks and Recreation cautions that "large surf, cold water temperatures, backwash, sudden drop-offs, pounding shorebreak, and dangerous rip currents can turn what seem like safe activities such as playing near the surf line, wading, or climbing on rock outcroppings, deadly."
